Throughout my career as an artist, I have constructed three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional textural surfaces in order to paint on and into them. These objects include lamps, curtains, chairs as well as completely non-objective forms.
The Curtain paintings represent an abrupt and drastic change in the concepts, materials, and methods of applying paint that I had previously employed.
Conceptually the Curtains speak about seeing, viewing, framing one’s world. The works bring a theatrical drama to the imaginary window being framed. In these pieces I sewed fabrics on to welded steel superstructures, then poured layers, veils, of thinned oil-based paint down the fabric surfaces, folds, and forms.
