The varied liGHTProject series continues my career-long exploration of constructing three-dimensional forms in order to paint them. In each of these series, I value the light source as an artistic medium to the same extent as the forms or colors. In all of the liGHTProjects, I am challenged to make aesthetic decisions regarding the lighting and fixtures which affect shadows, transparency, and color layering.
The Lamps are inspired by my years of collecting and repairing vintage lamps. In this series, I reference many of these antique forms while pushing the boundaries of traditional ceramics in creating wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramic bases. I paint the pieces using colored slips instead of paint. I then weld non-representational forms, wrap those in fabric, and paint them in order to create the shade. Light comes through the shades to varying degrees according to the translucency of the paint in.
